In a historic moment for space exploration, NASA successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The powerful new telescope is set to revolutionize our understanding of the cosmos, exploring dark energy, black holes, and the mysteries of the universe.
Named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first chief astronomer, the Roman telescope boasts a field of vision 100 times larger than both the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes. Its mission is to capture vast panoramic views of space, charting planets outside our solar system, known as exoplanets.
The successful launch took place on Sunday morning, with NASA administrator Nicky Fox describing it as a "glorious" event. "The ride was magnificent," she said. "It put us right where we wanted to be."
The Roman telescope will embark on a 100-day journey to a vantage point roughly one million miles from Earth. Once in its orbit, it will begin its mission to study exoplanets, which could help scientists answer the question of whether we are alone in the universe.
"We care so much about exoplanets because one of our main goals at NASA is answering the question, 'Are we alone in the universe?'" Fox explained.
The telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman, who was instrumental in planning the Hubble Space Telescope and later said its most interesting discovery was dark energy. The new telescope is expected to make significant advancements in our understanding of dark energy and dark matter, which make up about 95% of the universe.
"The crisp, sweeping surveys will help scientists investigate dark energy and dark matter, discover and characterise exoplanets, map billions of galaxies, study black holes, and explore objects from our own solar system to the edge of the observable universe," NASA said.
The Roman telescope will be positioned four times further from Earth than the Moon, where it can operate infrared space cameras without interference from the Moon and Earth. This is crucial for studying dark energy and dark matter, as well as capturing the heat light from distant galaxies.
President Donald Trump congratulated the scientists working on the project during a news conference. "You're the hottest in space, and we have the hottest country anywhere in the world. So, let's keep it all going. You're a big part of it," he said.
Astronomer Jenifer Millard described the Roman telescope as a "giant leap forward" for space exploration. "With Roman, we are going to make this giant leap forward... that is going to allow us to look at these distant, distant worlds and start to really resolve the atmosphere around them to let us know: could they be habitable?"
Millard added that the Roman telescope will help scientists create "enormous cosmic maps" of the universe at various stages. "They'll be almost like an onion, so you can peel back layer upon layer... and see how the distribution of galaxies changes through cosmic time," she said.
The Roman telescope is expected to operate for five years with a goal to operate for 10 years. Its launch is a significant milestone in the ongoing quest to understand the universe, and it promises to deliver groundbreaking discoveries in the years to come.
