Swiss Man Arrested Following Fatal Rave Shooting

A tragic incident at a Swiss rave has culminated in the arrest of a 43-year-old man in connection with the shooting that left one woman dead and several others injured. The shooting took place at a techno rave at a horse racing track in Aarau, a town situated approximately 29 miles west of Zurich.

The victim, 22-year-old Italian woman Maria Spinelli, succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while four men and a woman, all aged between 24 and 27, were transported to hospital with a range of injuries from minor to severe. The incident prompted a massive manhunt that spanned nearly 24 hours, culminating in the suspect's capture just before 01:00 on Monday, Swiss time.

Aarau canton police have confirmed that the investigation into the incident is ongoing. They have not yet disclosed the exact sequence of events, the background of the suspect, or the possible motive for the attack. However, authorities have stated that it is believed the perpetrator acted alone.

The shooting occurred at around 02:30 local time on Sunday when, according to an eyewitness, gunshots were fired just minutes after the music stopped. Initially, the witness believed the sounds were fireworks. He reported being told to hide by a man and a woman, the latter of whom was shot.

The Schachen race track, where the rave was being held, was expected to attract 3,500 attendees. Aarau, with a population of around 23,000, is less than 40km from the German border, where local media reported that police were supporting Swiss forces in the aftermath of the shooting.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed confidence in Swiss authorities' ability to investigate the incident thoroughly. "I am confident that the Swiss authorities will shed full light on what happened and find anyone responsible," she said.

Italy's foreign ministry has also announced that officials will be sent to Zurich to closely monitor the investigation into the tragic event.

Switzerland has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Europe, though violent shootings are rare. More stringent controls have been introduced in recent years, following the last major shooting in 2001, when a gunman killed 14 members of the parliament and local government in Zug, near Lucerne, before taking his own life.
