A family of five from England has swapped suburban life for a rented villa on a Thai island after selling nearly everything they owned — including the house they once assumed they would live in forever.
Jasmine Scarr, 34, and her husband Ross Scarr, 38, left their hometown of Darlington in May along with their three children, two dogs and just five suitcases between them. The couple says the dramatic downsizing was aimed at finding a happier, more connected way of life.
Before departing, the pair parted with the property they had expected to be their long-term family home, which People reported was worth around $475,000. Their new base is a four-bedroom villa renting for roughly $950 a month with utilities included, complete with a private pool, garden and a veranda looking out over the jungle.
The move was driven largely by work pressures. Ross, a welding engineer, used to do shifts at a site about two hours from where the family lived, a routine that squeezed the time everyone could spend together and, according to Jasmine, began taking a toll on her husband's mental health.
Now the household's days are built around the children. Jasmine, who works in business payroll, waits until her children are asleep before logging on for her job. Because Thailand runs six hours ahead of the United Kingdom, she can keep daytime hours free for family life while still earning remotely.
Education has also changed shape since the relocation. Jasmine pulled seven-year-old Jayden and five-year-old Johnson out of their school in March so she could teach them herself overseas. Each morning, the boys spend at least two hours after breakfast working through math, English and other subjects.
Two-year-old Mali is getting an early start as well, with lessons in basic numbers and colors. Learning extends beyond the kitchen table: trips to local temples have opened conversations about Thai culture, and the two boys have signed up with a soccer team. Jasmine also hopes they will pick up the Thai language over time.
Jasmine first fell for the country as a teenager and had long wanted to go back. She admits that offloading a home and nearly all of their belongings was daunting, but she now views the leap as unquestionably the right call for her family.
For now, the Scarrs have committed to at least a year in Thailand and have made no concrete plans beyond it. Longer term, though, Jasmine says they would like to stay put — and may even launch a business there someday.
