### Russia Claims Assistance in Repelling Niger's Attempted Coup

Niamey, Niger – Russia has publicly stated that its military forces played a role in thwarting an attempted coup in Niger, which unfolded on Saturday morning. The unrest, marked by explosions and gunfire, targeted key military installations in the capital, Niamey, including a crucial military airbase and the presidential palace.

According to the Nigerien foreign ministry, the rebellion was successfully contained with the support of Russian military personnel. "Nigerien forces repelled the attack with the assistance of servicemen of the African Corps of the Russian Ministry of Defence," the ministry confirmed on Sunday. The situation is now under the control of the legitimate authorities, led by President Gen Abdourahmane Tiani.

The Alliance of Sahel States, which includes Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, described the attempted coup as "a betrayal by a group of soldiers involved in an attempt at destabilisation." However, the authorities have yet to provide details on the number of soldiers involved or the extent of casualties.

Gen Tiani, who took power following a coup in 2020, has not publicly addressed the incident. The state broadcaster aired footage showing several alleged mutineers being apprehended by the Presidential Guard. By Sunday, commercial activity was gradually returning to normal, with petrol stations, shops, and other businesses reopening.

The airbase attacked on Saturday, Air Base 101, is part of the Diori Hamani airport complex and hosts Nigerien military aircraft and drones. It also serves as a base for an Alliance of Sahel States counter-terrorism unit, with Russian and Italian forces also present, according to Reuters.

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have all shifted their alliances away from Western partners and towards Russia, despite ongoing jihadist violence in the region. The attempted coup highlights the challenges facing Niger's military, which must contend with both external insurgencies and internal discontent.

The airbase where the mutiny originated had been targeted by jihadists twice this year, once by an Islamic State affiliate and later by an al-Qaeda affiliate. Nigerien authorities have increased security patrols around key sites in Niamey following the attempted takeover, including the main airport entrance and the presidential pavilion.

Russia's African Corps has emerged as a significant security partner for military governments in the Sahel region, which has been grappling with long-running jihadist insurgencies. The involvement of Russian forces in Niger's internal affairs has raised questions about the extent of foreign military intervention in the region.

The attempted coup comes as Niger continues to navigate complex geopolitical dynamics. While the government has sought to distance itself from Western influence, it remains vulnerable to internal challenges and external pressures. The successful containment of the attempted coup may be seen as a victory for the government and its Russian allies, but it is unlikely to resolve the underlying issues facing Niger.

The incident underscores the importance of regional security cooperation in the Sahel, where military governments are increasingly looking to Russia for support. However, the shift in alliances has raised concerns about the potential for increased conflict and instability in the region.

As Niger moves forward, the government will need to address both the external threat of jihadist violence and the internal challenge of maintaining stability. The involvement of Russian forces in the recent events has added a new dimension to Niger's complex security landscape, raising questions about the future of the country's foreign policy and its role in the Sahel region.
