French Authorities Probe Potential Malicious Act in Normandy Passenger Train Derailment
Authorities in northern France have initiated an in-depth judicial inquiry into whether deliberate interference or a malicious act caused the severe derailment of a passenger train
Authorities in northern France have initiated an in-depth judicial inquiry into whether deliberate interference or a malicious act caused the severe derailment of a passenger train on Friday evening. The incident, which occurred in the Normandy region, has prompted heightened scrutiny from state prosecutors, railway safety specialists, and regional transport bodies.
The regional passenger service was travelling along a busy intercity transit corridor connecting the Norman cities of Rouen and Caen when the disaster took place. According to local media reports, there were 186 passengers travelling on board the train at the moment the carriages left the tracks.
The derailment unfolded shortly before 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT) near Cléon, a commune situated immediately south of the city of Rouen. The sudden accident triggered an immediate, large-scale emergency mobilization to assist stranded commuters and evaluate the structural damage to the train and surrounding infrastructure.
Judicial officials are currently examining physical evidence recovered from the crash site to establish how the train was forced off the rails. Sébastien Gallois, the public prosecutor overseeing the ongoing investigation, confirmed on Saturday that detectives and technical experts are treating the presence of an obstruction as their primary line of inquiry.
In an official briefing, prosecutor Gallois explained that the leading hypothesis points to a piece of rail lying across one of the operational tracks, which likely triggered the derailment upon impact. He emphasized, however, that investigators have yet to determine why or how this piece of steel was present on the trackbed.
The violent incident resulted in injuries to dozens of passengers, necessitating a swift medical triage operation along the railway corridor. In total, 44 individuals required medical treatment from emergency personnel who converged on the crash scene near Cléon.
Among the casualties, the most severely injured passenger was an 18-year-old woman whose condition was initially deemed critical by emergency medical crews. Due to the extent of her injuries, emergency services coordinated an airlift operation to rapidly transfer her to a specialized hospital for intensive treatment.
Prosecutor Gallois provided an encouraging update regarding her prognosis on Saturday, confirming that while the young woman remains hospitalized, her condition has stabilized and her life is no longer in danger. The prosecutor added that other injured passengers have received appropriate medical care and have either been formally discharged or are expected to leave hospital facilities shortly.
Early investigative steps undertaken by the Rouen prosecutor's office moved swiftly to examine the train driver's actions and condition. Standard toxicology screenings carried out immediately following the crash confirmed that the driver tested negative for both alcohol consumption and illicit drug use, ruling out operator impairment as a contributing factor.
To establish the exact sequence of events, investigators have impounded the train’s on-board data recorder, commonly known as the black box. Forensic analysis of the recorder's data will allow technical specialists to evaluate the train's speed, braking response, and operational parameters in the moments leading up to the derailment.
In addition to digital analysis, a court-appointed rail expert has been formally assigned to inspect the mechanical wreckage and railway infrastructure. Authorities have also scheduled multiple interviews with railway staff, witnesses, and technical specialists to determine whether the rail piece was left behind due to maintenance negligence or placed deliberately.
The scale of the rescue response reflected the severity of the accident, with approximately 140 firefighters and extensive emergency response teams deployed to the scene. First responders worked rapidly through the evening to secure the derailed carriages, assist passengers through the damaged compartments, and ensure no lingering hazards remained along the line.
Eyewitness accounts from survivors highlighted the sudden and terrifying nature of the crash. A passenger named Louis recounted his experience to regional radio broadcaster ICI Normandie, describing how minor vibrations rapidly escalated into violent, uncontrolled shaking within seconds, making it impossible for passengers to remain in their seats.
Louis detailed the frightening conditions inside the cabin during the impact, noting that side windows partially shattered and heavy ballast stones from the railbed were propelled into the passenger compartment. He noted that the violent jolts and sudden destruction left passengers deeply shocked as they waited for emergency crews to arrive.
While several French media outlets have published reports suggesting the possibility of targeted sabotage, state authorities have refrained from making definitive statements on the matter. Judicial officials maintain that the investigation remains focused on gathering concrete physical evidence to definitively establish why the obstruction was on the line and ensure safety across the national rail network.
