The fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk sparked an intense nationwide backlash, resulting in widespread terminations and disciplinary actions against workers who voiced online criticism in the immediate aftermath of the killing.
Among those deeply impacted was Gerald Bourguet, a 35-year-old sports writer who saw his professional and personal life unravel within a matter of days. In September 2025, Bourguet believed he had attained his ideal life, having recently purchased a house featuring a swimming pool, welcomed a newborn son with his wife, and secured a full-time role reporting on professional men's basketball.
That stability vanished shortly after Kirk, who led the Christian youth organization Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on September 10 while addressing an audience at Utah Valley University. As tributes began flooding social media platforms, Bourguet posted several sharp critiques labeling Kirk an "evil man" who had devoted his life to promoting hateful agendas. He also admonished Kirk's base for failing to show similar outrage over school shootings.
Explaining his decision to publish the remarks, Bourguet noted that he felt unsettled by the widespread praise and lionization directed toward the activist, particularly in light of the extensive public record of Kirk's controversial statements.
During his public career, Kirk had established himself as a deeply polarizing presence across the American political spectrum. To conservative supporters, he was viewed as an articulate and charismatic leader adept at attracting younger demographics to right-wing ideology. Conversely, political opponents viewed his commentary regarding immigration, racial dynamics, gender identity, and firearm legislation as profoundly offensive.
The response to Bourguet’s online statements was swift and damaging. Screenshots of his commentary circulated rapidly across social media networks, prompting his employer, PHNX Sports, to terminate his employment. The sports media outlet did not respond to requests for comment regarding the firing.
The repercussions quickly extended beyond his career into his family's personal safety. Bourguet became the target of doxxing after his residential address was leaked online, and he began receiving hostile, threatening text messages. Facing immediate safety concerns, the family fled their home state with their four-month-old infant, returning months later solely to finalize the sale of the property before permanently relocating.
Reflecting on the fallout a year later from an undisclosed location, Bourguet acknowledged that the transition has been exceptionally difficult, stating that he would not wish the grueling experience on anyone. Nonetheless, he maintained that he did not regret sharing his perspective, even while coming to terms with the reality of rebuilding his life from the ground up in his mid-thirties.
Bourguet’s dismissal represents just one case among hundreds of individuals who faced severe workplace discipline or dismissal nationwide after publishing critical statements about Kirk following his death. While the long-term impact has varied across the country, the disruptions have left a lasting imprint on many working professionals.
In several instances, disciplined or terminated employees eventually managed to secure reinstatement or were awarded substantial financial restitution, sometimes amounting to millions of dollars. However, others facing similar circumstances have received no compensation, leaving them with no alternative but to start their careers over entirely.
The wave of disciplinary actions was driven by a coordinated public pressure campaign on digital platforms. Prominent right-wing figures actively targeted Kirk’s detractors, with commentator Laura Loomer, who commands nearly two million followers on X, issuing warnings that critics should prepare to see their future professional ambitions dismantled.
Demands for swift consequences were also endorsed by senior political leaders in Washington. Vice President JD Vance publicly urged citizens to confront anyone seen celebrating Kirk's death and directly contact their workplaces to demand disciplinary measures, a stance he highlighted while hosting an episode of Kirk's podcast program.
The administration maintained a firm posture against perceived endorsements of violence. White House spokesperson Davis Ingle emphasized that anyone participating in or expressing support for political violence and assassination culture must be condemned in the most severe terms.
State-level officials similarly leveraged institutional mechanisms to target Kirk's critics. South Carolina State Representative Jordan Pace, a Republican, called for withholding state funding from colleges and universities that neglected to discipline staff members who made disparaging comments about Kirk, a proposition that was later amplified online by President Donald Trump.
Pace defended the punitive measures, asserting that public shaming serves an appropriate societal function when applied to individuals who celebrate political murder and the death of an innocent father with two young children. He argued that the application of cancel culture is justifiable under such specific circumstances.
In contrast, left-leaning commentators and civil liberties advocates argued that a fundamental distinction exists between voicing criticism of Kirk’s public career and actively celebrating his assassination. Critics further accused conservative officials of hypocrisy, pointing out that many of the figures currently demanding professional retribution had previously spent years publicly condemning cancel culture and advocating for broad speech protections in the workplace.
