Colombian Former Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia Charged With Abuse of Power Over Polygraph Interrogation of Nanny

Colombian judicial authorities have formally brought criminal charges against former Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia, accusing the prominent political figure of abuse of power in connection with an illicit lie detector examination imposed on her domestic employee. The case marks a significant legal escalation in a high-profile controversy that has reverberated across the highest levels of the South American nation's political establishment.

According to prosecutors, the former senior official overstepped her lawful authority by co-opting state security apparatus to handle a private domestic dispute. The formal indictment alleges that Sarabia improperly deployed law enforcement personnel and government facilities to investigate personal matters that were entirely divorced from her official duties, constituting an unlawful exploitation of public resources.

The political scandal first came to public light in 2023 after an investigative report by the prominent Colombian news magazine Semana. The publication revealed that a woman employed to look after Sarabia’s young child had been detained, transported to an official government site, and attached to a polygraph device following the suspected theft of money from the official's private apartment.

At the center of the dispute was the alleged disappearance of a briefcase containing thousands of dollars in cash from Sarabia's residential property. Instead of pursuing standard civil or criminal reporting channels available to ordinary citizens, Sarabia stands accused of leveraging state security mechanisms to identify whether her household employee had taken the funds.

The nanny, Marelbys Meza, provided a detailed account to Semana describing how the coercive interrogation unfolded. Meza recounted that she was collected by Sarabia’s official driver and driven directly to a state-owned installation situated immediately across from the presidential palace in the capital, an ordeal she described as feeling tantamount to a kidnapping.

Upon her arrival at the government facility, police officers subjected Meza to intense questioning while strapping her to a lie detector apparatus. The private domestic worker was pressured by uniformed personnel to confess to the alleged theft of the missing cash, an experience that underscored the dramatic imbalance of power between the senior government official and her household staff.

Throughout the polygraph examination, Meza firmly denied having taken any money from the apartment. In numerous media interviews following the revelation of the interrogation, she has repeatedly and consistently maintained her innocence, rejecting all accusations of criminal conduct leveled against her.

Prosecutors maintain that directing state police officers to subject a private citizen to polygraph tests for personal reasons represented a gross misappropriation of institutional power. Judicial officials emphasized that public security agencies and official testing equipment are strictly designated for matters of state security and lawful judicial processes rather than the resolution of private household losses.

During a formal judicial hearing, the 32-year-old former minister rejected the allegations of abuse of power brought against her, offering no further immediate elaboration before the court. Her defense team is expected to challenge the prosecution’s characterization of the events as the proceedings move forward through the justice system.

Sarabia had previously released a statement on social media platforms indicating that her legal representatives were actively managing the matter. In that public message, she reaffirmed her respect for Colombia's judicial institutions and stated that she retained complete faith in the independence and judgment of the authorities reviewing her case.

The indictment represents a dramatic legal turn for Sarabia, who had swiftly ascended the ranks of Colombian politics to become one of the most influential aides to President Gustavo Petro. Petro, who made history as the country's first left-wing head of state during his tenure from 2022 to August this year, relied heavily on Sarabia as his core operational confidante.

When the scandal initially broke in mid-2023, Sarabia was serving as Petro's presidential chief of staff, a pivotal role that positioned her at the nexus of government operations. The ensuing public and political outcry compelled her to resign from that position in June 2023 as scrutiny intensified surrounding the treatment of her former nanny.

Despite her departure from the presidential palace, Sarabia’s political career soon rebounded as she was subsequently named foreign minister, leading the nation's diplomatic corps from January until July 2025. Following her exit from the ministerial portfolio, she was assigned to another high-profile post as Colombia's ambassador to the United Kingdom.

The criminal proceedings against Sarabia are expected to draw continued domestic and international attention, serving as a critical test case for executive accountability. Legal analysts note that the case highlights enduring institutional questions regarding the boundaries of official power and the protection of vulnerable domestic workers against the arbitrary deployment of state authority.
